Beautiful Places to Go Snowshoeing in the Twin Cities:

In order to get the full experience of snowshoeing in the Twin Cities, we recommend you to visit the following places:

  • Lake Elmo Park Reserve – Located in Lake Elmo, you’ll find a fantastic place for snowshoeing this winter. The Lake Elmo Park Reserve is one of the best places to go, being just 15 minutes from St. Paul. There are 7 miles of packed trails, looping around Eagle Point Lake. The majority of the trails are flat, but depending on which direction you choose to travel, you may encounter a few hills.
  • Theodore Wirth Regional Park – Theodore Wirth Regional Park is one of the most popular places in the Twin Cities because it allows you to go snowshoeing in Minneapolis. In fact, this park is very popular year-round and you’ll see people hiking on the trails, sledding, cross-country skiing, and more. There are about 6 miles of multi-use trails available, all of which are groomed.
  • Afton State Park – In Hastings, on the border of Wisconsin and just 40 minutes from Minneapolis and 25 from St. Paul, lies Afton State Park. This park is just minutes from the popular Afton Alps Ski Resort, which is one of the best places for downhill skiing in Minnesota. In state parks, you’re able to snowshoe anywhere within the park boundaries, except on trails that are specifically groomed for snowmobiling or skiing. This leaves you with a broad range of opportunities for snowshoeing in open fields and pretty much anywhere your heart desires!
  • Interstate State Park – In St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, you’ll find Interstate State Park. This is a beautiful park, located along the St. Croix River. There is an Interstate State Park on both the Minnesota side of the border, as well as the Wisconsin side. In Wisconsin’s Interstate State Park, you’ll find about 12.5 total miles of trails. The Skyline Trail is groomed and is meant for skiing. The other trails are open to hikers and snowshoers. There is a good mix of trails for beginners, intermediate, and advanced visitors. The beauty within this park easily makes it one of the best places to go snowshoeing near the Twin Cities in winter.

Other beautiful places to go snowshoeing in the Twin Cities: Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge, William O’Brien State Park, Tamarack Nature Center, Lebanon Hills Regional Park, Fort Snelling State Park.
